A popular question I’ve seen on many forums is whether legitimate opportunities to work from home via the internet exist. In a word, yes, such jobs do exist but there are only a few I know of that aren’t scams and are definitely worthwhile.
For a couple of months I held the position of “Internet assessor/quality rater” with a company called LionBridge Technologies, who are contracted by a well known search engine to carry out various tasks. Since all search engines are based on algorithms and keyword filtering, real people are often drafted up in order to manually check, configure, optimize and analyze data. My job, on a freelance basis, involved sifting through numerous queries and websites, subsequently submitting rationalized quality ratings to help improve the search engine.
Prior to being taken on I was required to send in a CV/resume in addition to answering emails and reading, agreeing to and signing a Non disclosure agreement. An exam must be sat too but this is nothing to worry about. Revision is required but the exam is fairly straightforward if you study the source material carefully.
Although the tasks were often difficult and required much thought, the pay was good with tax responsibility falling to myself. Should you successfully take up this job, be aware of any tax you must pay. Hours can be worked whenever you like and range from 10 – 20 per week. I always received my pay by wire transfer on time which was in Euros, so the currency exchange rate will obviously be a factor in how much you earn. The reason I left this job is because I was offered another elsewhere with more hours.

Tips
- Use Firefox for this job. It’s cleaner, faster and more efficient than Internet Explorer and opening lots of new tabs as opposed to new windows helps speed things up.
- Study the revision material carefully.
- If you get the job, don’t post sensitive details on forums or websites. I’ve been careful to respect the non disclosure agreement I signed and have only revealed what is already publicly available.
- Can you cope with the boredom of working alone for several hours a day?
