“One man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure.” If you agree with this saying then you may be interested in the Freecycle network, a web-based community of users who give unwanted belongings to others rather than discard them. This not only cuts back on refuse in landfill sites but simultaneously solves the problem of what to do with items you’re unsure of in addition to doing someone else a favour.

The network is built using Yahoo Groups and is a forum based organization so that users may write and post topics offering or requesting something which would otherwise have been thrown away. If you live close to someone from whom you’d like to collect an item, it is a simple matter of privately arranging a time and date. What is even more useful is that each town and city has its own designated forum to keep everything simple, coherent and local.

Have a look at www.freecycle.org and see if you can save a bit of cash by finding something for free that you’d otherwise have to buy. Or if you don’t want to dump your junk at the council refuse site, advertise it for collection and have it taken off your hands by someone who needs it.
